Advances in dermatology have led to the development of treatments that truly deliver results without traditional downtime. The VI PEEL is one such treatment that yields impressive results and a dramatic improvement in skin texture and tone, regardless of skin type. It is a gentle yet powerful medical-grade chemical peel that corrects skin discoloration, acne and acne scarring, signs of premature aging (fine lines and wrinkles), and uneven texture. As a result, the VI PEEL is the number one selling chemical peel, with over 10 million treatments performed by medical professionals worldwide.
How Do Chemical Peels Work?
Chemical exfoliation or “chemical peeling” originated in ancient Egypt when soured milk, or what is now known as lactic acid, was applied to the skin to improve its appearance. Since then, chemical peels have advanced significantly and play an important role in facial rejuvenation and maintenance of skin health. Many of the conditions associated with aging occur as a natural consequence of hormones, trauma, and the decreased cellular turnover rate as we age. The purpose of a chemical peel is to induce a controlled injury to the skin’s surface layers, stimulating the production of new collagen and elastin. The surface layers start to peel once the new skin is ready to emerge, revealing soft, healthy, radiant skin.
What Are The Different Types of Chemical Peels?
Chemical peels are classified according to penetration or depth, including superficial, medium, and deep peels. Medium-depth peels penetrate to the dermal-epidermal junction level down to the papillary dermis, while deep peels penetrate down to the level of the reticular dermis. Both medium-depth and deep peels are the most effective for correction and anti-aging. However, deep peels require anesthesia and prolonged recovery. Thus, medium-depth peels are the most sought-after treatments due to their effectiveness and minimal downtime.
What Are the Five Different Types of VI PEELs?
There are five different types of peels within the VI PEEL Collection. They all contain the proprietary base of five key ingredients: retinoic acid (Vitamin A), trichloroacetic acid (TCA), salicylic acid, phenol, and ascorbic acid (Vitamin C). In addition, some formulas contain added boosters to treat specific skin concerns effectively. The formulas are safe for ALL skin types and are pain-free.

What Should I Expect During the Procedure?
The peel is applied in the office by board-certified nurse practitioner Kelley Diefenderfer, APRN, is painless, and the entire process takes about 30 minutes. The skin is first cleansed and prepped to remove all makeup, dirt, and oils. The solution is then applied in layers, allowing it to absorb and dry between passes. The treatment should be relatively painless for most people; however, those with sensitive skin types may experience a tolerable mild tingling sensation with the initial application. Patients are sent home with a post-treatment kit and interactive app that contains everything needed for Days 1-7 following the chemical peel.
What Should I Expect After the Procedure?
You will leave the office with the VI PEEL on your skin. You will be prompted to wash your face in four hours and follow the directions of the post-care kit. You should avoid intentional sun exposure for a week and excessive sweating for 48-72 hours after treatment. Your skin will start to peel around the mouth first, followed by the upper areas of the face. Peeling typically begins on Day 3 and completes by Day 7. Exfoliation may be mild or moderate, depending on the level of correction needed. For best results, a series of 3 peels are often recommended, each spaced four weeks apart.
The Bottom Line
